ULA Exhibit graphics/wayfinding design & production

Canadian Urban Institute annual awards

Role

Graphic design (wayfinding & signage), production (mounting graphics, banner frame & cube assembly), printer coordination

At the end of my second year in the School of Design, I was among a group of students from the Introduction to Majors course invited to work with the Canadian Urban Institute on the creation of an awards day exhibit co-sponsored by George Brown College. The assembled team of students worked with Professor Ian Gregory to craft a proposal to the CUI, who as our clients worked with us to determine the final exhibit.

The core deliverable for the awards day were three oversized photo cubes containing award winner details balanced against urban texture images. The photo cubes were built in an East Toronto workshop under the guidance of a master carpenter, who was extremely patient dealing with students operating power tools. The graphic panels were printed on high-quality photo paper, then sprayed with 3M repositionable glue before being carefully placed on the backside of plexiglass panels. The panels were mounted into their frames, with the final frame section sealing the cube.

Cube construction & assembly

In addition to the photo and text panels, we created wayfinding and podium signage, as well as two vinyl banners on frame installations placed between the ballroom doorways.

The following year I was hired by CUI to refresh the graphic panels and help deliver & assemble the exhibit. This time I had the printers adhere the panels to the plexiglass.
